Joe was an icon in the automotive industry. So many of us bought our first cars or trucks from Joe. Then our children brought their first vehicle from Joe - Smyle Motors.
Joe was not just a car salesman - he attendned weddings, birthday celebrations, graduations and funerals of our loved ones. He remembered our childrens' names and always asked how our parents were doing. He was a part of our community.
Rest in peace Joe, you will not be forgotten.

I worked for Joe 3 different times. But shortly after I started the first time, one winter evening, he asked if I was available to help him deliver a truck to a farm outside Edson. He took the truck and I took a little front wheel drive car to pick him up. It was starting to get dark when we left the farm. With Joe now driving, he wasn't headed back to the highway. He was heading deeper in to the back country. We pulled in to an old oil lease and he asked me to grab him what was on the back seat. A rifle. Many fearful thoughts raced through my mind but I was relived when he informed me we were moose hunting on the way back! I asked how we were going to get it back in this little front wheel drive car, but all he kept saying was we'll figure that out when we get one. We never did get one, we just drove around and ate the "dinner" Joe packed us. Kubasa and white bread. One of many, many Joe stories I enjoy telling.

Like so many others, our relationship with Joe started at the dealership. Joe was more then just our salesman at Smyl GM, but he was also our friend. It didn't matter where we would run into Joe, weather it be at the dealership, IGA or the farm for a fire the greeting was always the same, "Ahhh, there's the Brooks'!"
We are deeply saddened by the passing of Joe. Our deepest sympathy to Maureen, Rhonda, Terry and Carol Anne, Duane and the rest of the family.

When we first met, you asked me to call you Joe. And it took me awhile to be able to call you by your first name. I have much respect for you and you will be dearly miss. So Joe, rest in peace and thank you for all your advice and kind words that you have given me. I have met alot of DPs throughout my journey and you are a GEM #solidmentor. I will always remember, you went to the service bay and got me a jug of windshield fluid and filled up my car so I can drive home safely on that Friday evening. Love you Mr Joe smyl. Pat and I extend our sincere condolences to Maureen and family. I have known Joe since their family moved to Mayerthorpe in the late 1950's to take over the ownership of Pioneer Motors. Joe was dedicated and hard working, most often the first one to the garage in the morning and the last one to leave after the shop was closed. He was an excellent addition to the Mayerthorpe Sr. Baseball team (photo attached) as the catcher and heavy hitter. He was a kind and generous person who will be missed by all who had the good fortune to know him. May he forever rest in peace.

My sincere condolences to the Smyl family and staff at Smyl Chevrolet. I met Joe 34 years ago when I started my journey with GM/GMAC and always appreciated Joe’s kind spirit and sense of humor. Joe always made time for you and made you feel welcome. I enjoyed calling on Joe’s dealership for many years and feel fortunate to have had the privilege to work with such a great man. Joe always had the best stories and he’d usually share them while having soup at the local café. Joe’s love for the auto industry was infectious and he was admired & respected across the dealer network. I’m grateful I had the opportunity to meet and work with such an incredible person. He will be missed.

I met Mr. Smyl in High Level, at Terry and Carol Anne's, many years ago. He was reading the newspaper, and I was doing some work there. Mr. Smyl talked to me about the decline of bees. It was still a pretty new observation then. I loved his compassionate care for nature. Very special man. Thinking of all of his family and friends, who will miss him dearly, but know he is at rest.

So very sad to hear of Joes passing, I have many fond memories of Joe visiting my parents with a new vehicle. He would say “Vic just keep it and drive it for a few days” after many no no no from Dad. Joe would be off with the old one and Dad would be driving the one he left ! Mom and Dad bought every vehicle they ever owned from Joe ! Then there was the day he brought the little red Chevy truck for my brother, off he went with his Firebird trade, not long after leaving he was at the door shaking his head! The tire had fallen off a few miles up the road! So many more stories and fond memories, he was quite the salesman, looked after his customers and had a heart of gold . Maureen and family are in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
