Obituary of Dorothy Myshyniuk

Please share a memory of Dorothy to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Dorothy Myshyniuk passed away suddenly, on December 17, 2022, in Penticton, British Columbia. Her birthday in February would have marked her 94th year. Dorothy was born in Unity, Saskatchewan, on February 24, 1929. As a toddler she moved to Alberta; first to Rat Lake, then to St. Paul and landed in Elk Point. She worked hard as a child, with chores that helped the family; getting up early in order to round up and milk cows, to deliver milk both before and after school. At 13 she was bed ridden for 74 days, with Inflammatory Rheumatism, which affected her heart. She survived and a few years later, she would meet her future husband, Matt Myshynuik. At 16, she met Matt, who along with his brother had a service station in Elk Point. One rainy day when she delivered the milk, he offered her a ride home. A few days after that, he asked her out to the movies. At 17, she married Matt and in 1952, Matt moved the family to Whitecourt. First living in the downtown, and then to what became the family farm just outside of town. Dorothy delivered 10 babies over the years. She even delivered one in Matt’s truck, on the way to Mayerthorpe hospital. She maintained a fine home and worked hard on the farm. She picked berries, canned goods, chased cattle, milked cows, churned butter, made bread; and on special occasions she made doughnuts (Oh those doughnuts.) Feeding the family was hard work, but there was always room for others at the Myshynuik table. Especially if they wanted to play a hand or two of Canasta. All those years of hard work paid off as she had a long, full and happy life. Dorothy is survived by her children, Albert, Darlene, Joe (Laurieann), Ricky, and Ron; 13 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Dorothy was predeceased her husband, Matt Myshynuik; her mother, Mabel Robinson her mother’s partner Will Knuff; sister, Della Povaschuk; brother, Norman Robinson; their children, Michael, Andy, twins Donnie and Donna, and Fred; her son-in-law, Don Sutherland (Darlene); daughter-in-law, Velma (Ricky.) Dorothy will be missed by her family, and as a long-time resident of Whitecourt, she will be missed by many friends. A service and celebration of life will be held on June 2nd, 2023, at the Whitecourt Seniors Circle In lieu of flowers please consider a donation, in her name, to Diabetes Canada.
