Shirley Gail Ratke November 2, 1951 – July 31, 2023 It is with sorrowful hearts that we announce the passing of Shirley Ratke on Monday, July 31, 2023 in Drayton Valley, Alberta surrounded by the love of her family at the age of 71 years. Shirley will be lovingly remembered by her daughter, Brandi (Steve); grandchildren, Michael (Kayla) and Victoria; great-grandchildren, Talia and Levi; sister, Elaine (Doug); nieces, Michelle, Cindy, Amber, and Ashley; nephews, Harold, Gavin, and Tyson; cousins, Randall, Sarah, and Meagan; sister-in-law, Suzy, along with numerous other family members, and her friends at West Pine Lodge. Shirley will be greatly missed. Shirley was predeceased by her son, Jason; parents, Florence and Fredrick; and brothers Earl and Elmer. Shirley was a woman who was strong, bold, honest, had a good sense of humour and was always joking and laughing; Shirley was kind-hearted and exceptionally generous to those in need and was a steadfast advocate for others. Shirley was an absolute social butterfly, but her greatest passion was spending time with her family, especially her children but the time spent with her grandchildren Michael and Victoria was very precious. Camping, sleepovers, playing Zelda with Michael, watching Hannah Montana with Victoria, picnic outings with just her grandchildren was time well spent. Michael and Victoria would come at separate times, as Shirley wanted them to feel extra-special and have her undivided attention. she was very proud of Michael and Victoria and the people they grew up to become. When it came to flowers, Shirley had a green thumb and truly enjoyed their beauty. When not with her family or in the garden, Shirley loved to read a great mystery, watch the birds, talk of history, solve Sudoku and play along with Jeopardy, she was a big fan of David Attenborough and David Suzuki. Shirley’s wish to others was that she wants people to let go of the anger and learn to forgive so they can move on. The family wishes to thank the staff at the Drayton Valley Hospital and Care Center for their compassionate care during Shirley’s stay. As Shirley requested, a private family service will be held at a later date.
